Breakthrough

Jesus loves us perfectly! He longs to give each of us breakthrough in life to know Him deeper and in a more intimate and real way. He wants nothing more than to give us His glory and make us one with Him as He is one with our Father in heaven (John 17:22-25).

He often gives us breakthrough to His glory step by step so that He doesn’t overwhelm us. I picture these perfectly planned promotions by visualizing different instances in His Word.

For the first level of intimacy and glory, the account of the woman at the well comes to mind. I can imagine that scene at Jacob’s well! One hot afternoon, Jesus was weary and fatigued but more eager to bring light to who He is to a desperate and hopeless outcast. When the Samaritan woman understood who Jesus was and is, that encounter and breakthrough instantly changed her life! She was so amazed and filled with His living water that she left her water jug and ran back to town to testify who Jesus was to others. That’s usually what happens when we come to know Jesus. We are instantly transformed and we can’t keep it in. We have to share the Good News with all we know, because their very souls depend on it.

Another level of glory and breakthrough is hearing the Word of God and it translating into faith with action. I think of the hemorrhaging woman who was so desperate for healing. She heard of Jesus’ healing power and believed it for herself, so she had to do something! She pushed through a crowd in spite of the social distancing laws imposed on her at the chance of knowing Jesus’ healing power personally. This act of faith combined with action changed her life instantly! I think of Jesus’ words, “It shall be done to you according to your faith;”(Matthew 9:29b NASB).

The next level of intimacy with Jesus is being still and sitting at His feet like Mary. Recognizing there is no one or no thing that can compare to His lovingkindness, peace, and truth beckons us to be still and just listen for what He longs to say to us. As the Psalm 42 says, “as the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God”

I think the ultimate level of knowing Jesus is going from His feet to sitting in His lap and receiving His embrace like a small child. Out of all of the disciples’ descriptions, I love how Mark depicts how Jesus interacted with the small children. Mark 10:14-16 notes that Jesus said, “Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.” Oh, to truly know His deep affections and love for us! Let us continually fix our eyes on Jesus to know Him more as He gives us breakthrough from glory to glory.
