Deadlines

Unless the Lord builds a house, They who build it labor in vain; Unless the Lord guards a city, the watchman stays awake in vain. Psalm 127:1

I think it is safe to say we have all experienced deadlines at some point. They seem to govern our days. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a deadline is a time or day by which something must be done.

In 2021 my husband and I were faced with many deadlines in order to sell our property to a developer. The pressure of the demands was intense. However, we knew Jesus was with us every second. He held back the raging waters that would have swept us away from the sale. He carried us through in His wisdom, grace, and mercies!

Now, in 2023, our school is facing hard deadlines for a building project. I have been excited to pray into this because I have seen God do the impossible, and I expect nothing less this time around.

As I was praying about the specific approaching deadlines, the Lord shifted my mind to higher thinking. It was as if He asked me, “Are there deadlines in Me?” I immediately thought, “There is nothing dead in You.”

You see, God establishes the times, and is not confined to an expectation. The Light of the world made the sun and moon stand still for Joshua as they battled all the kings of the Amorites (Joshua 10). The Ancient of Days is not limited to our timelines.

In Him are plumb lines. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a plumb line is a piece of string with a weight attached to one end, used either to test if something vertical, such as a wall, is exactly straight, or to find the depth of water. Relating a plumb line to our walk with God, I see a beautiful picture of how an end date acts as a wall for which our character is measured in God.

Isaiah 28:17 says, “And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter.” As cutoff dates approach, our character is gaged and forged. Are we upright and just in our dealings? Are we deep in our walk with the Lord, or do the waters sweep us away? Do we ask for His wisdom and respond? Do we hold to the truth that His steadfast love is never ceasing and His mercies are new every morning?

I love that grace and mercies are new every morning. We wake up, and there it is! We didn’t have to work for it. Psalm 23 repeats this as it says Certainly His goodness and mercy will follow me all of my days.

God in His mercy can meet a deadline, stretch a deadline, give supernatural wisdom for a deadline, and do more than we could ever ask or imagine to that ‘ole deadline.

With man it is impossible, but with God ALL things are possible. He works out ALL things for the good of those who love Him– ALL the time and in every circumstance. We are never late, but always on time in Him. In Christ, we are never put to shame.

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6
