Parenting Help

The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all;

Psalm 34:19

Children are a gift from the Lord and they help to bring awareness of God’s goodness in our lives. I can say I grow in my knowledge of the Lord through my children and the lessons I learn in parenting.

Although parenthood is full of daily victories, there are struggles as well. How do I display patience, gentleness, and love during a tantrum? How do I judge a dispute between siblings wisely? How do I stay in control without losing control? These are a few questions I have to ask the Lord. He says if any of you lack wisdom, ask Him! God does not find fault in us for asking, rather He gives us the wisdom generously (James 1:5)!

I am currently in the trenches of two-year-old tantrums. It is very unpleasant as the fits of temper unfold. I was desperate for wisdom on how to manage and calm the storm that has started to show itself all too often. There seems to be a tug-of-war battle between my child and myself.

As I pleaded with the Lord for a new way to approach the unpleasant outbursts, He gave me help! Where does my help come from? It comes from above! As the fit enraged, I suddenly found myself holding my toddler and speaking in tongues softly. As I began praying in the Spirit, she stopped her crying! It was incredible and in my heart I wondered if she would start the shaking-screaming-frenzy again, but as long as I was praying in tongues, she was calmed. When I stopped, a soft cry would start, so I began to pray again. The crying instantly ceased. Wow. I was blown away. Is this the tool I’ve been lacking? It was for this day and this struggle!

Tomorrow came and so did the fretting from my little one. Again, I began to hold her as I prayed in tongues. Can you guess what happened? The fit stopped immediately! When my prayer language stopped, the crying began, so I enjoyed picking the prayer right back up! Speaking in tongues equaled a ceasing of rage from my child. I knew it was not coincidence.

Whatever stage of parenting you find yourself in, I believe this will be a helpful tool. Maybe you do not have children, but you are presented with a frustrating circumstance. Cry out to the Lord in faith as you speak in your heavenly language. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in this prayer of trust!

Paul encourages us to desire the gifts of the Spirit and he explains that when we speak in tongues, we are speaking mysteries to God (1 Corinthians 14:1-2). God edifies or instructs us as we speak in tongues. I experienced this at the most crucial time. What a relief and help for my daughter and me! Be blessed as you gain heavenly wisdom and are delivered from whatever trouble you face. We serve an ever-present God and Father.

With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the

Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

Ephesians 6:16
